Torn City: Faction Recruitment

I recently had to make the difficult decision to step away from Torn MMO. More accurately, I had to step away from my long-time faction Natural Selection. I’d been with the specific faction (NS4) since they were the failed revive faction Waste Management so this wasn’t an easy decision, but work and life balance inadequacies were making it difficult to log in multiple times a day. Meanwhile, the faction family, and NS4 itself continues to grow and do greater things. I wasn’t willing to hold them back.

This is, overall, the result of some positive changes in my life. However, positive changes have required more time invested into my real life, and that’s spread me kind of thin in other areas… such as gaming. Oh noes, my browser gaming income. Anyways.

Originally, I thought I’d just… stop playing. Instead, I log on once or twice a day. Do some crime. Smoke a little weed… which in this game gives players the ability to do more crime, but there is a very small chance a player can overdose. Players WANT to overdose at least once in their Torn careers, because there is an honor bar and a merit point associated with doing so. Any faction worth being a faction has perks in place that makes overdosing harder to do, because while players might want to overdose on weed they absolutely don’t want to overdose on Xanax (which in this game, has the benefit of giving 250 energy and every player should be using them as often as possible.)

I had been in a faction for so long that I had forgotten one of the most irritating parts of not being in a faction was… getting random faction recruitment messages. Worse, a number of these are so generic, despite using verbiage meant to convince me that it has been tailored specifically to me. This isn’t too surprising; some of the larger factions use scripts to hunt for players that meet criteria that aren’t in factions and attempt to recruit them, so the statement that they are looking for “a player like me” isn’t inaccurate…

Still, it’s neat to see that in a game that has been around for as long as it has, there is still a focus on not just building community, but building the *right* kind of community that suits a given faction’s needs. And honestly, while some of these messages are likely copied and pasted, the fact that they are being sent by the leaders themselves shows a certain level of hard work, dedication, and willingness to “reach out” that is difficult not to praise.

Following is a list of every recruitment message I have been sent. If you are in Torn and looking for a faction, maybe one of these would be right for you?

cell-block8, the Warmaster of TBA-Rise Above, sent me this informative mailer:

You can’t read it, less because it’s a screenshot taken on my laptop, and more because it’s a screenshot for ants. If you click on it, it’ll take you to a normal person screenshot.

Splurgle, the leader of Onion Smugglers, sent me a polite message:

I haven’t been responding to most of these, because just reading them can be exhausting! Every once in a while I can’t help myself though. It’s not my fault, my parents didn’t love me enough as a child so I have to overcompensate somehow. This is what happened when ForesterISR, Leader of The Wolverines, sent me a message:

I’m going to miss Torn – it has been a part of my life for only a few years, but it’s been years that have seen a lot of change in my real life. It is rather telling that even now I can’t stay away from it. Too bad I can’t also be on it enough to… grow my stats, or get hits in during wars, or even level weapons.
